AMS Cancer Association of UBC
Who We Are - The University of British Columbia Cancer Association was created to support those affected by cancer in the UBC community and beyond. We are a student led philanthropic club that raises funds to support survivors and raises awareness about cancer related issues and resources.
What We Do - The UBCCA hosts many initiatives throughout the year that address different aspects of cancer support. We host fundraising events that culminate with our biggest event of the year Relay for Life. Through our social media and educational events we spread awareness and cancer education. We also host bi-monthly support sessions and socials for people in the UBC community affected by cancer.
Who You Could Be - If you are passionate about helping people affected by cancer you belong in this club! Whether you have your own experiences with cancer, have supported a loved one through their cancer journey, or have a purely compassionate connection, we would love to have you on our team.
Events
Relay for Life. Each year we work with the Canadian Cancer Society to run a staple event across many Canadian universities, the Relay for Life walk-a-thon and festival. Relay for Life is a chance to celebrate cancer survivors and honor those we've lost to cancer. Participants get access to an afternoon of free entertainment, activities, food, prizes, and a beautiful luminary ceremony remembering the reasons we walk. There are even extra prizes for those who raise the most money and walk the most laps at the event. All you've got to do is sign up for the event with your friends, make a team, and get fundraising. All funds raised through sign ups and donations go to cancer research and support.
Upcoming Events
Find us at the UBC Clubs Fair September 25, 26, and 27. We'll be sharing more information about our organization and handing out coordinator sign ups. If you want to bring your passion and dedication to the UBCCA, consider signing up for a coordinator role. Coordinators directly support the club's directors in every committee ranging from social media to event planning to acquiring sponsorships.
Blind Date with a Book, October 7, 8, and 9. Find your new Boo in time for Halloween. Take a risk and go on a blind date with a new page turner. Stop by the nest to purchase a book or two, guided only by a short summary of the story. If you're really brave, buy a book with no summary at all. All purchases will act as donations and go to our ultimate fundraising goal.
Peer Support
If you or someone you know are experiencing cancer, the UBCCA Peer Support Group is a safe space for people to connect with peers and share their experiences. Meetings will be held twice a month, a support session and a social session. If you are interested in joining please help us put together meetings that are most convenient for you by filling out the forms below.
