The UBC Dragon Boating Club is a competitive sports club that represents the University of British Columbia and the Alma Mater Society in recreational and competitive dragon boating. Dragon boating is similar to canoeing and long boating but composed of 20 paddlers, 1 steer and 1 caller all in a single boat. Typical race distances include 200 meters, 500 meters and 2 kilometer races. Training begins in October and the main race season occurs in May and June, with some smaller races also happening in July and August. All races and practices are held in False Creek, near Science World. The recreation team practices on Monday between 6:45-8:45 pm and Saturdays from 11:00 am - 1:00pm. The competitive team also practices on Monday and Saturday at the same time, but also has an additional practice on Thursday 6:45-8:45 pm. Our club is welcome and open to all people who are willing to dedicate their time to attending practices weekly and willing to try their best to continue to improve at every practice.
