Welcome to the official website of UBC Figure Skating Club! Our club's mission is to provide a community for skaters and skating enthusiasts alike, and to organize athletic and social events to encourage the general student body to get involved with the sport we are very passionate for.
We host a variety of events during the year. This includes, but is not limited to: competition viewing parties, motivation sessions, holiday parties, and more!
Our club also offers on-ice and off-ice workshops for all members to participate in! Both can be a great way for skaters to advance their skillset. For on-ice workshops, club members can expect coverage of jumps, spins, and skating skills. Off-ice sessions will often feature activities such as cardio, strength training, flexibility, and jump training.
Every year, the UBC Figure Skating Club provides an opportunity for members to show off their fantastic skills by performing in an ice show! Here, you get the opportunity to choreograph and practice your own program. Skaters of all levels are encouraged to participate to let loose and have fun on the ice!
How can I join the club?
To join the UBC Figure Skating Club as an official member, you must first purchase a membership ($10 for UBC students; $15 for non-UBC students) from Showpass or by paying in person at our club booth during an AMS Clubs Fair. ShowPass can be accessed via https://www.showpass.com/o/ubc-figure-skating-club/. Afterwards, please click the blue "Join" button (at the top left of this webpage) to fill in the fields in order to complete your membership.
Please note that memberships are not sold between May to mid-September. Prospective members can start purchasing memberships starting the week of the AMS Clubs Fair (Term 1 of the Winter Session).
Do I need to know how to skate to join the club?
We welcome skaters of all levels to the club. Club members can range from those who compete at the international level to those who are enthusiastic fans of the sport. However, please note that some on-ice workshops (e.g. jumps, spins, etc.) may require having pre-existing skills to participate.
Do you offer private figure skating lessons to members?
No, but we recommend looking at options provided by UBC Recreation. (For skating lesson info: https://recreation.ubc.ca/ice/adult/fall/).
Where do you skate?
Club members use the drop-in figure skating sessions at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. (Drop-in schedule: https://recreation.ubc.ca/ice/drop-in-ice/)
Do club members need to commit on a weekly/monthly basis?
No. The club is lower-level commitment that allows members to attend skating sessions and club events based on their own availabilities. We do not require club members to skate a certain amount of hours per week, nor are they required to attend all events. If you can't attend an event, that's okay! There's always the next one!
