Friends of Médecins Sans Frontières (FoMSF) UBC is a non-profit, student run organization which supports the work of MSF/Doctors Without Borders. There are numerous FoMSF branches all across Canada, including here in BC at the University of British Columbia. We support MSF through our Advocacy and Fundraising commitments and provide a community for students of various disciplines to work for and contribute to global health initiatives. Our advocacy events aim to educate the UBC community on global humanitarian issues, including the work MSF carries out across the world. This is done through boothing, panels, and solidarity walks. We also incorporate advocacy internally by holding bi-weekly global affairs discussions where a member of the team presents a specific MSF assignment and comes up with discussion questions for us to reflect on. Our fundraising events aim to raise funds for the club so that we can continue putting on events as well as raise funds for MSF to support their life saving humanitarian work.
FoMSF UBC has been around since 2008! Over the 16 years the club has been on campus, we've held a ton of events. In our more recent years, we've held an annual panel event inviting two UBC professors and two MSF expats to sit on a panel and discuss a topic of our choosing. Last year our topic was Ethics and Culture in Humanitarian Aid and the year before, it was on the Impacts of Climate Change on Humanitarian Aid. Other previous events include a Paint Night, Walk Without Borders, and Yoga Night. Last year we tried a number of new ideas like a food truck fundraiser, trivia night, and Valentine's Flower Sale. We're always welcoming new ideas for events and want to hear from students like you of what you would like to see from our club.
As always, FoMSF will be boothing for Imagine Day and Club's Week. Drop by our booth and say hi!
Our first event of the year is our annual Orientation for new members. Here you'll be given the opportunity to hear from an MSF expat and ask them questions about their assignments while enjoying some snacks. You'll also have a chance to win some prizes!
Then we'll be kicking off the year with a Trivia Night at a local restaurant and bar. Join us for some trivia while supporting Doctors Without Borders!
For the rest of the semester we'll be having a series of fundraisers and our annual panel event, as previously mentioned. This will be another chance to talk to MSF personnel about their work while engaging in a meaningful discussion about humanitarian aid.
Although we have this semester laid out, we would love to have general members plan an event of their own. Bring your ideas to our weekly meetings!
We can't wait to have you join our team!
