UBC Kung Fu Association

The UBC Kung Fu Association is the first and longest running martial arts social club at UBC. We offer three different styles of martial arts: Sanda, Wushu and Lion Dance. Here, we focus on learning the application and cultures of martial arts, maintaining a healthy body and mind, and providing a place for students to gather and create connections.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced martial artist, we welcome all experience levels to join our classes. Take advantage of our free trials to experience the UBC Kung Fu excitement firsthand and get your first class free!

Check our weekly class schedule on Instagram, drop by our classes, and let an exec member know if you are interested in becoming a member.

Come join our community and we can’t wait to see you in action!

Our Wushu Class

Wushu is where you will primarily learn fighting forms, known as Taolu. This encompasses the instruction of basic movements including kicks, punches, stances, jump kicks, and acrobatics. Additionally, this extends to movements with weapons, such as the Dao (broadsword), Jian (straight sword), Gun (long staff/cudgel), and much more.

Our Sanda Class

Sanda is a contact sport which combines traditional Kung Fu with modern combat fighting, and includes kickboxing style sparring, grappling, and takedowns. Sanda classes will include a warm up designed to mobilize and strengthen the body, practice technique such as shadowboxing and padwork, and optionally sparring.

Our Lion Dance Class

Lion Dance is where performers mimic a lion’s movements to bring good luck and fortune, accompanied by beating drums and gong instruments. Lion Dancing offers excellent cardio exercises, as well as stance and strength training, and is considered to be one of the disciplines of Kung Fu. More advanced dancers often learn complex stunts and tricks such as jumps and shoulder lifts, increasing the difficulty of the performance.
