MusicBox Children's Charity

We are MusicBox Children's Charity UBC! We seek to bring music education to children across the Greater Vancouver area - especially to those who face social or economic marginalization. Our club provides opportunities for our volunteers to teach children music. We work with kids ages 3-15, and offer a diverse array of group and individual lessons for different ages! No music experience is required for most of our programs, and we're always happy to welcome new volunteers! 🎉

Program Descriptions

→ Our ECE and WMA programs do not require any musical experience – just a passion for music and/or teaching!

→ Our PL program requires proficient instrument experience (e.g. note reading, basic theory knowledge, can play the instrument) – we will provide training on teaching 🧑‍🏫

Early Childhood Education (ECE) (ages 3-5): Group lessons. Teach basic musical concepts (eg. speed, volume, pitch) through story adventures and sing alongs with movements-based activities. Goal – support the development of gross motor skills, speech, socio-emotional and whole child development through music.

World Music Appreciation (WMA) (ages 5-12): Group lessons. Teach a blend of music theory+history and introduce music from diverse cultures by dancing, singing, and storytelling. Goal – build confidence and methods of self expressions. Develop knowledge of musical cultural expressions, human rights education, foster relationship building and a love for music.

Private Lessons (PL) (ages 3-15, variable): Private lessons. Teach 1-on-1 lessons on an instrument of the child’s choice (including voice!). Volunteers foster musicality in students, offer positive encouragement to promote healthy growth mindsets as both musicians and as people.

All programs have an annual year-end recital in May/April to celebrate their new musical knowledge!

We also offer program-specific field trips throughout the year (Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Carousel Theatre, etc.). Volunteers may receive discounted tickets - stay tuned!

Upcoming Events

  • September 15 (2PM-4PM): Training for all members! + 1st social
