Velkommen! (That's Welcome in Norwegian)
We are a UBC club for students who are interested in the Nordic countries and want to meet other students who share this interest. Some members are from the Nordic region and want to strengthen their connection here in Canada, though most are simply interested in the Nordic region and want to learn more about it and participate in activities from different cultures alongside a community of students!
Visit our Website or Instagram for more information about the club and our events!
We host many events throughout the year, both social and academic. Movie nights, game nights, trivia nights, guest speakers, and monthly pub nights are just a selection of our recurring events! Every year, we also host a massive end of year event and a stunning Christmas Lucia performance! Here are a couple of our most popular offerings:
Fika is a Swedish tradition of getting together with friends & family and chatting. It is most often accompanied with coffee and pastries or sweets and is an integral part of the Swedish lifestyle. The SNSA and the Nordic Studies Department hold a fika every Wednesday in the Buchanan Tower CENES Lounge with coffee, tea, and pastries. Feel free to join us and get to know fellow students as well as professors and faculty from the Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies (CENES) department.
Lucia is a Scandinavian celebration that takes place in December. Choirs dress in white robes and perform a candlelit procession while singing traditional songs as a way of bringing light to the darkness of winter. The choir also selects one member to be Lucia (an ancient martyr who brought food to those in hiding) who wears a crown of candles. The SNSA has carried out this tradition for many years with a choir of students performing Swedish and Danish songs.
The Sámi are the Indigenous people of Sápmi (Sámi land), which includes parts of Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. February 6th is Sámi Day, when the Sámi people are honoured in the Nordic countries. Each year in February, the SNSA hosts a guest lecture for the UBC community to attend and hear stories about Sámi culture.
