The UBC Seri Malaysia Club (SMC) was founded in 1993 at the University of British Columbia, Canada, in hopes of catering to the needs of Malaysian students at UBC. It is a social and cultural club, which serves not only as a support group for Malaysian students who are far away from home, but also as a place where Malaysian students can get together with other Malaysians. It is also our goal to promote and share the Malaysian culture with students of UBC through our sociocultural events.
Stay connected by following us on social media and joining our online communication channels to stay updated on upcoming events and opportunities. Feel free to reach out via email or our contact form for any inquiries, suggestions, or to learn more about becoming a member. We look forward to welcoming you to the Seri Malaysia Club family!
We aim to establish a robust support system for Malaysians in UBC and Greater Vancouver. By connecting individuals through events and online platforms, we help reduce homesickness and provide opportunities to build genuine friendships. We are dedicated to introducing non-Malaysians to Malaysian culture, including our diverse cuisine, festivals, and customs, promoting cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. Additionally, we share opportunities related to career advancement and diplomatic affairs, such as career fairs and diplomatic visits, contributing to the professional growth of our members. We also offer leadership and growth opportunities for club executives, fostering skills in event planning, teamwork, and community engagement.
We host a variety of cultural celebrations to bring the Malaysian community together and share our rich traditions with others. Events like Chinese New Year, Eid al-Fitr, Diwali, and Iftar are celebrated with traditional Malaysian festivities, including delicious food, cultural performances, and communal activities that reflect our heritage.
Our social gatherings, such as the Welcome Back BBQ and Icebreaker Night, are designed to welcome newcomers to Vancouver and introduce them to the club. These events provide interactive games and activities that help build lasting friendships. Game Night, Teh Tarik Night, Karaoke Night, and Trivia Night offer relaxed and friendly environments where members can enjoy various activities, engage in lively conversations, and showcase their talents. Sports Day promotes health, teamwork, and camaraderie through participation in sports like badminton and futsal. Taste of Sea is a culinary event featuring seafood delicacies that are staples in Malaysian cuisine.
We organize special engagements like Malaysia Singapore Night, a collaborative event celebrating the shared cultures, food, and traditions of Malaysia and Singapore. Additionally, we offer unique opportunities to engage with members of the Malaysian royal family and political figures during exclusive meetups, providing insights into our nation's heritage and current affairs.
We understand the challenges of transitioning to a new environment. Our club offers guidance to newcomers navigating their first year in Vancouver, providing tips on campus life, city exploration, and more. We facilitate the buying and selling of used items within the community to make settling in more convenient. Furthermore, we provide essential services such as consulate information, assistance with postal voting, and updates on governmental matters to ensure our members have access to necessary support.
Our club keeps members informed about career fairs, internships, and job opportunities relevant to their fields of study, contributing to their professional growth. We also engage in events related to diplomatic visits and discussions on Malaysia's role in global affairs. By taking on roles within the club, members can develop leadership skills in event planning, marketing, finance, and more, making a meaningful impact on the community.
