UBC Sikh Students' Association

The Sikh Students’ Association of UBC was established in 1985 and is a way for students at UBC to connect with each other and with Sikhi while making impactful contributions to the greater Lower Mainland community. As a club, we hope to make learning about and experiencing Sikhi more accessible to university students and foster a positive community for Sikh students. Our club hosts multiple large-scale events each year including langar days, kirtans, and social events for all interested university students. We also organize multiple group discussions, kaur & singh socials, and prayer sessions which allow us to talk about Gurbani and discuss it in Sangat (community). Below you can find details on some of our key event. Everyone is welcome to come and learn about the faith and participate in whatever capacity they'd like!

Langar Day:

Langar Day is an event where our club comes together to serve free vegetarian food to university students with the aim of spreading kindness as well as teaching equality and compassion. The concept of Langar was introduced by Guru Angad Dev Ji, our 2nd Guru, and emphasizes that human beings are all equal regardless of caste, race, gender, etc., and should all have access to food.

Kirtan Programs:

Kirtan is a medium through which sikh students and community alike can connect with Waheguru (God) through singing hymns written in Gurbani. The Kirtan events held by SSA are led by youth kirtanis and open to all Sangat (community). These events are free of cost and often happen once a term if not more.

The Vand Shako Project:

Given the increase in food insecurity across the campus, UBC SSA has started a consistent program to provide free vegetarian food for students in need similar to Langar Day. This project runs once a week for 1-2 hours and over 100 meals are distributed to assist students with fighting growing food insecurity. Food is served every week outside the next from 7pm until all food is distributed. More details and recent updates on this project can be found on our Instagram (@ssaubc).
