AMS UBC Taekwondo

Welcome to UBC Taekwondo!

Whether you're a "retired" black belt, actively training for your next belt, have no idea what Taekwondo is, or are just looking for something fun between lectures, this is the club for you! As one of the largest martial arts clubs at UBC, we pride ourselves on building an inclusive and supportive community through the traditional Korean martial art of Taekwondo.

Here at UBC Taekwondo, we aim to teach the various techniques of Taekwondo, along with fostering a fun social environment to make lasting friendships. If you're looking to enter into the world of Taekwondo, reconnect with it, or continue to further your journey, consider checking us out!

AMS UBC Taekwondo

What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a multi-faceted sport that has its roots in traditional Korean martial arts that date back over 1000 years ago! Today, it is practiced internationally and even recognized as an Olympic sport.

Taekwondo is most known for emphasizing powerful and highly stylized kicks, blending these techniques with many of its core aspects in pattern-based poomsae, high-flying demonstration kicks, and technical sparring. In addition, if you are entirely new to martial arts, Taekwondo serves as an amazing foundation for fitness and a starting point for all aspects of self-defence.

Social Events and Collaborations

While we are called UBC Taekwondo, training Taekwondo is only one part of the club! These past years have been nothing short of incredible, with a wide range of social events and collaborations that have brought our members closer together and helped us grow as a community. Below is a list of a couple of the recurring and non-recurring events and collaborations that we have done in the past!

Collaborations:

  • Going to the University of Washington: One of the highlights of the year was our trip to Seattle to train with the University of Washington Taekwondo Club. It was a jam-packed weekend filled with intense sparring, new friendships, and learning.  Not only did we get to level up our Taekwondo skills, but we also shared laughs and stories with our fellow martial artists across the border.
  • UBC KungFu Collab - "Fist meets Feet': Who says you can only train only one martial art? Last year we teamed up with UBC KungFu for a exciting joint practice. We blended the fluidity of kungfu with the high flying kicks of Taekwondo creating the ultimate martial art.
  • UBC Muay Thai: We also collaborated with UBC Muay Thai  in an intense crossover class. Learning new techniques, combining old ones, and doing a martial arts relay race along with free boba is a recipe for success.
  • Best of the Nest: In collaboration with several of the martial arts and combat clubs here at UBC, the BOTN is an annual performance we take part in to show off our Taekwondo prowess to a large audience in the Nest.

Social Events:

  • Karaoke Nights: Who knew martial artists could also sing?  Karoake night proved they couldn't but even still our karaoke night was filled with laughter, unforgettable performances, and plenty of off-key moments.
  • Trampoline Park Adventure: We bounced, dunked, and attempted backflips at the trampoline park, proving that even off the mats, we love to stay active!
  • Hotpot Dinner: Nothing brings people together like good food. Our hotpot dinner was a way to re-energize after a hard day of training, leaving us with endless plates of deliciousness and great conversation.
  • Picnic in the Park: To wrap up the year, we hosted a relaxing picnic. It was a perfect day of sunshine, frisbee, and bonding over snacks. It’s in moments like these where the true spirit of our club shines through.
  • Sparring Tournament: One of our proudest moments this year was holding a in-house sparring tournament to show off the skills our members have honed in the semester. It was an incredible opportunity to showcase the art of Taekwondo that our team poured their hearts into, and win some medals on the way!

How can I get involved?

Are you ready to kick-start your journey with the UBC Taekwondo Club? Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned martial artist, we’d love to have you join our growing community! Here’s everything you need to know about how to get involved and make the most of what we offer:
