AMS Young Women for STEM
Who are we?
We are a group of female-identifying UBC students from different STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields committed to being role models for the next generation and to making a difference in our community. Our main goal is to reduce the gender gap by inspiring more young people, especially girls, to pursue careers in STEM fields.
What do we do?
High School Presentations: We visit high schools in Metro Vancouver and the Okanagan and give a 45-60 minute presentation to a class. Our presentations consist of short talks by 3-4 members about their fields, path to STEM and UBC, research, university experience, and future career goals, as well as one or two hands-on activities or demonstrations.
Gender Equity Conference: A conference focusing on the roles and experiences of women and gender-oppressed communities in STEM fields in the past, present, and future. Features invited speakers who are working professionals in STEM fields, presentations by members of the UBC Young Women for STEM, and networking opportunities.
Social Events: We will have extra events during the year to socialize, become more connected as a group, and have fun!
Why do we do it?
We want to serve as leaders and role models for the next generation of scientists. We want to inspire and encourage more girls to pursue science. We want to be involved and make a difference in our community. We want to develop our leadership and public speaking skills. And we want to connect students from different scientific disciplines to work together in support of women in STEM.
